To locate a book on our shelves, you need both the Call Number and the location.   Our catalog, Bearcat, lists this for every item on our shelves, and you can also tell if it is available or checked out to someone else.  We use the Library of Congress call number system to organize our books.  At both Crumb and Crane libraries we have a number of specialized topic and format collections.  You can ask at the desk for directions but here is a quick guide to some of the more common collections in Crumb Library.

Main Floor

  • The Reference collection – call numbers include the prefix REF.  These primarily dictionaries and encyclopedias do not circulate.
  • Life and Browsing Collections – at the foot of the stairs.

Second Floor – under the low ceilings starting on your left as you reach the top of the stairs

  • Current Periodicals
  • Index collection
  • Crumb Stacks – most of the second floor
  • Oversize – back wall
  • Media (VHS/DVDs) – at the end of the low ceiling stacks, on your right

Second floor – in the middle of the high ceiling center

  • US Gov’t Docs and New York State Docs – directly in front of you at the top of the stairs
  • Juvenile (JUV) books and the Curriculum (CURR) collection – directly behind you at the top of the stairs
